Make Your Makeup Last Longer in the Hot and Humid Summer
Summer is just around the corner and any makeup wearer would agree that it’s the worst time to wear makeup!
With the weather getting warmer and increasingly humid, we’re going to start feeling like our makeup is melting off our faces very soon – and nobody likes that!
Hot and humid weather is totally the worst for keeping your makeup in place and looking perfect all day.
And that’s where I come in!
In today’s post, I’ll share important tips on how to keep your makeup looking great all day.
These tips will extend the wear of your makeup, making it sweat-proof, heat-proof, and smudge-proof, which is a must for the summer.
Well, as sweat-proof, heat-proof, and smudge-proof as makeup can be! We definitely can’t create miracles LOL.
But, with these tips, your makeup will definitely keep looking great for a longer period of time in the summer heat.
And I live in Hawaii where it’s hot and humid at all times of the year! So, I’d like to think that I know a thing or two about extending the life of my makeup. 😉
So, without further ado, let’s get started!

Tips to Make Your Makeup Heat-Proof, Sweat-Proof, and Long-Lasting this Summer
1. Use an Oil-Free Moisturizer
Moisturizer is always a super important step in your skincare (and makeup) routine, during any season of the year.
Your skin will naturally produce more oil in the summer, so it’s best to use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer.
An oil-free moisturizer will give your skin the moisture it needs, without making it greasy, and will prep your skin for makeup!
I know you’re thinking it – do you need a moisturizer if you have oily skin? YES, absolutely yes.
When your skin is lacking moisture, it will overcompensate and produce more oil, making your skin even oilier!
It sounds counterproductive, but trust me on this! Oily skin definitely needs moisture, too. Just make sure to use a light-weight oil-free moisturizer instead of a heavy cream.

2. Don’t Skip the SPF
Sunscreen is another super important step in your skincare (and makeup) routine, especially in the summer!
(You really should be wearing SPF all-year-round, though, even if you don’t live in a sunny place or go outside very often.)
The sun’s UV rays are so much stronger than we realize and it’s doing damage to our skin every single day. This can lead to premature aging and sun spots – and we don’t want that!
We spend more time outside in the sun during summer, which means more exposure to harmful UV rays, so it’s especially important to be extra vigilant during this season.
If wearing makeup on top of sunscreen, go for a non-greasy, lightweight sunscreen that’s made to be worn under makeup.

3. Use a Primer that Extends Wear of Makeup
Primer is one of my favorite steps in my makeup routine because it can totally make or break your makeup!
Using the right primer can extend the wear of your foundation for hours! And especially in the hot summer when makeup tends to wear off sooner, we need all the help we can get!
The right primer for you depends on your skin type, but as a general rule of thumb for the summertime, choose a primer that is oil-free.
And if your skin tends to get shiny quickly, look for a mattifying primer.
- Tatcha – The Silk Canvas Protective Primer (seen in my Holy Grails)
- Hourglass – Veil Mineral Primer (seen in July 2018 Favorites)
On a regular basis, during all seasons of the year, I use the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base layered with the Tatcha Silk Canvas Primer on top.
I have fairly dry skin, so I need a moisturizing primer, even during summer. If you also have dry skin, I highly recommend this combo!

- NYX – Studio Perfect Primer in Clear
- L’Oreal – Infallible Pro Matte Lock Primer
4. Wear Less Foundation
Makeup tends to slip and slide around the face more when the weather is hot and humid, so the logical thing to do would be to wear less of it.
If you’re comfortable wearing a lighter amount of base makeup, you could opt for a light-coverage foundation, a BB cream, a tinted moisturizer, or even just concealer on certain areas.
- Laura Mercier – Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 – Oil-Free
- NARS – Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30
- NARS – Radiant Creamy Concealer (seen in my Holy Grails)
But, if you’re like me and totally cannot handle going lighter on the foundation, not to worry – you can totally still be full-coverage and full-glam without having your face melt off.
Which brings me to my next tip…
5. Wear a Matte Foundation with Loose Setting Powder
These two products together will be your best friends during the summer if you want full-coverage foundation that lasts all day.
Matte foundations will almost always have oil-absorbing properties that will help control shine throughout the day.
And using a loose setting powder will really lock it into place, make it a little more matte, and seriously extend the wear of your foundation by a lot.
On days when I want my foundation to last for an extra long time, I will press loose setting powder into my skin on my ENTIRE face with a damp sponge.
Not just areas that I applied concealer and want to prevent creasing, like under my eyes, I will do this LITERALLY everywhere until every spot on my face is dry to the touch.
This method can make your skin look dry, so I wouldn’t recommend it if you have really dry skin. It’ll do wonders for you if you have oily skin, though.
I have fairly dry skin (but not super dry), and I like to use a foundation with more of a natural finish (NARS Natural Radiant Foundation) instead of a matte foundation with this method, so my skin doesn’t look like it’s dying of dehydration.

6. Use Eyeshadow Primer to Lock in Your Shadow
I know we all hate it when we spend a good amount of time blending our eyeshadow perfectly only to have it look like a mess thanks to a hot and humid summer day.
And that is why eyeshadow primer is so important!
Especially for those who have oily eyelids which cause your eyeshadow to crease super easily, eyeshadow primer is a must!
Eyeshadow primer helps eyeshadow adhere to the eyelid, extending the longevity of the eyeshadow. And it also makes eyeshadow appear more vibrant!
It evens out the tone of your lids (raise your hand if you have weird veins that show on your lids, too) and creates the perfect canvas for eyeshadow to be applied to.
- MAC – Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Painterly or Soft Ochre
- Urban Decay – Eyeshadow Primer Potion
- NARS – Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base
Alternatively, you can use whatever concealer you already have as an eyeshadow primer. I do this all the time!
7. Use Waterproof Smudge-Proof Eyeliner
If you are a liquid liner wearer, you must make sure you use a waterproof smudge-proof formula in the summer!
We don’t want racoon eyes, right?
Especially after taking the time to create two perfect wings, it would be a nightmare to look in the mirror halfway through a hot day and realize they’re ruined!
To lock in your liquid eyeliner even more, a great tip is to apply black eyeshadow (or whatever color liner you’re using) on top of the liner to really set it into place.
This method is just like how we set our foundation in place! An angled eyebrow brush works perfectly for this.
- NYX – Epic Ink Liner (seen in Drugstore Dupes)
- Maybelline – Eye Studio Master Precise Liquid Eyeliner
8. Use Waterproof Mascara
I’m kind of on the fence with this tip because I personally do not like wearing waterproof mascara.
It’s just so hard to remove and unless you’re super patient with removing it gently (with an oil cleanser), it’s so easy to damage your lashes!
When using a makeup wipe to remove waterproof mascara, be sure not to rub it too roughly, otherwise you’ll end up pulling your lashes out!
However, since we’re talking about making your makeup last in the summer heat and humidity, waterproof mascara will no doubt last longer than washable mascara.
Especially if you tend to sweat under your eyes a lot, definitely use a waterproof mascara to prevent the mascara on your lower lash line from smearing. We don’t want panda eyes!
I actually don’t have any luxury mascara recommendations for you because I’m totally a drugstore girl when it comes to mascara! I just go through one tube so quickly that I don’t think it’s ever a splurge item.

9. Powder Your Brows then Set with Gel
I know this tip sounds super weird, so let me explain!
Before applying your brow product, lightly apply loose powder on your brows. Not too much where you can really see the powder on your brow hairs, but just a little.
If you do your foundation before your brows, you can just do this step while you’re setting your foundation in place. Just lightly dust over your brows with the powder, too.
This just gives the brow product a rougher surface to adhere to and prevents it from moving throughout the day. Especially after moisturizer, primer, and foundation, the surface of your brows can get a little slippery!
After shaping and filling in your brows, apply a bit of eyebrow gel to really keep those hairs in place!

10. Set Everything in Place with a Long-Lasting Setting Spray
I use setting spray every single day, throughout the entire year, but it’s especially important during the summer!
Makeup tends to wear off sooner when it’s hot, so we need all the help we can get to extend its wear!
And using a setting spray to do that is almost a no-brainer. It locks in your entire face of makeup and definitely improves the longevity of your makeup.
It also helps make your makeup sweat-proof and transfer-proof!
Bonus Tip: Stay Inside
LOL this tip is kind of a joke, but it’s true! If you really want your makeup to last its longest, stay inside and avoid the heat at all costs. 😉
And that’s it for my tips on how to keep your makeup from melting off this summer!
Seriously, using these tips will definitely help your makeup last longer, even through the hot and humid weather.
Try some of them out and let me know how they worked out for you!
