Fall/Autumn Drugstore Beauty Essentials – Makeup and Skincare You Need for Fall!
It’s crazy to think that and we’re already transitioning into the fall season! Where has the time gone?! 2019 is going by in a blink of an eye!
I’m sure we all had a great time with the glowy, fresh, and fun makeup of the summer, but it’s now time to get into fall makeup!
I’m still a huge fan of the sun-kissed glowing goddess vibes that summer gives us and don’t want to stop that just yet!
So, fall is the perfect time to still hang onto those summer feelings while slowly transitioning to winter, without having to worry about our makeup melting off our faces!
Some of the key points of fall makeup are smokey eyes, deep berry tones, darker lips, and just an overall more sultry vibe than summer.
In today’s post, I’ll share amazing drugstore makeup products that will help you create the perfect fall look to help you seamlessly transition from the hot months of summer to cooler sweater weather!
So, without further ado, let’s get started!

Drugstore Makeup and Skincare Products for Fall
Moisturizer is always an important step in your skincare (and makeup) routine, at all times of the year!
Different seasons just call for different types of moisturizer!
Fall is right in between the hot humid weather of summer and the cold dry weather of winter, so it can sometimes be difficult to determine exactly what kind of moisturizer your skin needs.
The air is starting to get crisper in the fall and while your skin may not necessarily show it, it definitely needs more moisture than it did during the summer. (Especially if you live somewhere that experiences really cold winters!)
For that reason, I’d recommend a lightweight moisturizer that is hydrating, but does not have the heaviness of a cream. (We’ll save the creams for the super dry winter months!)
If you live in an area that still feels hot and humid during the fall season, I would recommend an oil-free moisturizer that leaves your skin feeling fresh.
Here are some great options:
- Neutrogena – Hydro Boost Water Gel (if you have oily skin, go for an oil-free gel moisturizer like this one)
- Neutrogena – Hydro Boost Gel-Cream
- Neutrogena – Hydro Boost City Shield Water Gel with Broad Spectrum SPF 25
- Mario Badescu – Hydro Moisturizer with Vitamin C
- e.l.f. – SuperHydrate Moisturizer
Primer is definitely one of the most important steps in any makeup routine, in my opinion!
Using the right primer not only extends the wear of your makeup, it preps your skin to create the ideal surface for foundation application.
Unless you live in a super hot area, you no longer have to worry about your makeup melting off your face in the fall.
So, unlike during the summer, when I recommended a mattifying oil-free primer to keep the oil and shine to a minimum, I recommend a hydrating primer for the fall.
With the colder weather, your skin will definitely be happier with more moisture!
Here are a few hydrating primers:
- e.l.f. – Poreless Putty Primer
- NYX – Bare With Me Hydrating Jelly Primer
- NYX – Honey Dew Me Up Skin Serum & Primer
Natural Finish Foundation
For summer, I’d recommend a matte foundation and for winter, I’d recommend a hydrating foundation. So, naturally in the fall, I’d recommend something in the middle!
Matte foundations can be slightly drying in weather that’s getting drier and drier by the day. And hydrating foundations can be slightly too dewy for weather that’s not quite super dry yet.
Of course, the type of foundation that is right for you during the fall season depends on your skin type. So, take notice of how your skin reacts to any foundation you use.
If you notice your skin getting oilier than you’d like throughout the day, try something that has more of a matte finish.
And if you notice your skin looks really dry and your fine lines/dry patches are being emphasized, try a foundation that has more of a dewy finish.
A few amazing natural-finish foundations are:
- L’Oreal – Fresh Wear Infallible Foundation
- Catrice – HD Liquid Coverage Foundation
- Makeup Revolution – Fast Base Stick Foundation

Concealer to Highlight Face
When I think about fall makeup, it’s definitely more on the glam side and less fresh-faced than summer makeup.
And glam means highlighted and contoured!
Not only do you highlight with highlighter, you also highlight with concealer in a lighter shade than your foundation to bring attention to the center of your face.
The areas to highlight with concealer are under your eyes in an upside-down triangle shape, in the middle of your forehead, down the center of your nose, your philtrum (middle of your upper lip), and the middle of your chin.
And for the best effect, the concealer should be full-coverage so those areas stay bright all day.
My favorite full-coverage drugstore concealers are:
- L’Oreal – Infallible Full Wear Concealer
- e.l.f. – 16HR Camo Concealer
- Makeup Revolution – Conceal & Define Concealer
Having setting powder in your makeup routine is not exclusive to just fall makeup – it’s a total must for all seasons of the year!
However, the type of setting powder might differ from season to season.
In the fall, use a setting powder that isn’t too matte and won’t make your skin look dry.
I like using a lightweight powder that holds makeup in place, while leaving a natural finish.
Some great powder options are:
- Maybelline – Fit Me! Loose Finishing Powder
- NYX – HD Finishing Powder
- Flower Beauty – Miracle Glow Satin Finishing Powder
Contour for a Sculpted Look
As I said above, fall makeup to me means glam and glam means highlighted and contoured!
There are two types of contour products you can choose from – cream or powder. Or, you can use both, of course!
Just remember – cream contour goes on before setting powder!
When choosing a contour shade, choose a few shades darker than your skin tone, depending on how subtle or bold you want your contour to appear.
Contour should always look as if it is a real shadow on your face, so choosing the right undertone is key.
Basic rule of thumb: If you have a fair-medium skin tone, look for neutral shades that mimic an actual shadow. And the darker the skin tone you have, the more warmth and depth you need in a contour shade to prevent it from looking ashy on your skin.
It can be really hard to figure out the right contour shade without a lot of trial and error.
So, if it’s your first time, choose a shade that matches your foundation shade. For example, I wear light neutral in most foundations, so I would choose a contour shade that’s marketed for light skin tones.
Another option is to opt for a contouring palette so you can play around with different shades to see how they look, and you can even mix shades!
A few powder contour product options are:
- NYX – Highlight & Contour Pro Palette
- BH Cosmetics – Studio Pro Shade & Define Contour Palette
- Wet n Wild MegaGlo Contouring Palette
And a few cream contour products are:
- e.l.f. – Cream Contour Palette
- Wet n Wild – MegaGlo Dual-Ended Contour Stick
- L’Oreal – Infallible Total Cover Concealing and Contour Kit
Since we’re transitioning away from the sun-kissed bronzed look as we move into the fall season, a neutral-toned bronzer is the way to go.
I still think having a bit of warmth on the skin is really pretty in the fall, but maybe I just can’t let go of the golden goddess vibes LOL.
But really, all jokes aside, adding a bit of warmth back into your skin after basically taking away all color from your skin when applying foundation is really important so your skin doesn’t look lifeless. (We don’t want zombie skin!)
I just try not to overdo bronzing during fall because too much can really start to look out of place, especially if you don’t live in a sunny area.
My favorite neutral-toned (ish) bronzers are:
Mauve/Deeper Tones for Blush
Gone are the summer days of light pink and peach blush for a fresh, youthful look.
Fall is all about deeper tones, so go for a deeper pink, mauve, or berry shade for blush.
Some amazing drugstore blushes are:
- Milani – Baked Blush (try shade Rose D’oro or Berry Amore)
- Catrice – Blush Box (try shade Berry or Burgundy)
- Maybelline – Fit Me Blush (try shade Plum or Berry)
Summer was all about having a golden glow, so my go-to highlighter was a gold shade.
But, in fall, we’re slowly transitioning into the ice queen vibes of winter, so the perfect highlighter would something in between golden and icy.
And that would be a champagne shade!
A few gorgeous champagne highlighters are:
- ColourPop – Super Shock Highlighter in Flexitarian
- Wet n Wild – Mega Glo Highlighting Powder in Golden Flower Crown (more on the golden side)
- Maybelline – Master Chrome Highlighter in Molten Pearl
Berry-Toned Shadows, Dark Shades for Sultry Looks
As I mentioned above, the fall season is all about smokey eyes, deep berry tones, deep olives and blues, and just an overall sultry look.
It’s time to put your warm shadows down and bring out your neutrals! I always recommend buying an eyeshadow palette so you can create multiple looks with one product.
And you can also use some shades in the palette during other times of the year and for other purposes (highlighter, blush, etc.)!
Here are a few eyeshadow palettes that are perfect for fall:
- Milani- Gilded Rouge Eyeshadow Palette
- Milani – Pure Passion Eyeshadow Palette
- NYX – Ash Ultimate Shadow Palette
- BH Cosmetics – Sylvia Gani Palette
- Morphe – Jaclyn Hill The Vault Bling Boss and Dark Magic Palettes (technically not drugstore, but still affordable)
Glitter Shadow for Sparkly Eyelids!
I’m the kind of girl that ALWAYS puts a glitter/shimmer shadow on my eyelids, regardless of the season!
But, especially during the fall season, when makeup is sultry and glam, glitter/shimmer lids are a must.
Adding glitter/shimmer to any eye look can easily take it from 10 to 100 and it’s SO pretty!
I have so many glitter/shimmer shadows that I love, but here are some of my absolute favorites:
- ColourPop – Super Shock Shadows
- ColourPop – Jelly Much Shadows
- Pixi Beauty – Liquid Fairy Lights (a great dupe for the Stila Glitter & Glow Liquid Shadows)
- Flower Beauty – Warrior Glitter Shadow
- NYX – Glitter Goals Cream Quad Palette
Liquid Liner – Winged Liner, Glitter/Metallic Liner
To amp up our glam fall makeup even more, we need a liquid liner to draw a sharp wing!
Of course, you can create a beautiful glam fall look without winged liner, but it undoubtedly takes your look to a different level.
I actually rarely do winged liner, but when I want to look super glammed up, it’s one of the first things I’ll add!
And if you’re feeling adventurous with your makeup, fall is the perfect time to try a glitter or metallic liner!
The best drugstore liquid liners are:
Try these fun glitter/metallic liners:
Colored Liner for Waterline
I’m a big fan of always lining my waterline – it’s just something I can’t live without.
Whether you want to brighten up your eyes, make your smokey eye look even smokier, or add just a bit of extra color to your look, applying liner to your waterline adds so much!
Since I LOVE a super smokey eye look, my go-to liner for fall would be a dark shade to line my waterline with.
However, if you aren’t quite ready to leave the bright, bold colors of summer behind, adding a colored liner to your waterline is the perfect way to add some color into an overall dark eye look.
Check out these colored pencil liners perfect for your waterline:
- NYX – Retractable Liner
- NYX – Slide On Eye Pencil
- L.A. Girl – Ultimate Eye Intense Wear Auto Eye Liner
Dark Lips or Nude Lips
The type of lip product you go with really depends on your personal preference.
For a typical dark smokey eye look for the fall season, the accompanying lip shade is usually a dark shade as well, or a nude shade.
Go for a dark shade to create a monochromatic look – deep reds, burgundies, plums, etc.
And go for a nude shade if you really want the emphasis to be on your gorgeous eye look!
Here are a few great lip formulas:
- Maybelline – SuperStay Matte Ink Lip Color
- NYX – Soft Matte Lip Cream
- Revlon – Super Lustrous Lipstick
- Almay – Lip Vibes
Glammed Up Lashes
Of course, with a glam look, we cannot forget about having super glammed up lashes!
For me, that would mean putting on a pair of super voluminous falsies. But, if you don’t like wearing false lashes, get a mascara that adds length and volume to your natural lashes.
Take a look at these super glam false lashes:
- Kiss – Lash Couture Triple Push-Up, Teddy
- Kiss – Lash Couture Faux Mink, Gala
- Eylure – Luxe Cashmere No. 9
Voluminizing mascaras I love:
- L’Oreal – Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara
- L’Oreal – Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara
- Essence – Lash Princess False Lash Effect Mascara
Hydrating/Radiant Setting Spray
In any season, setting spray is a total must to set your entire face into place and to help extend the wear of your makeup.
While summer usually calls for a mattifying setting spray to help control oil in the heat and humidity, we don’t have to worry about that much during the fall.
And depending on where you live, you might even want a hydrating setting spray if the air is starting to get really dry.
I personally love using a setting spray that leaves a radiant finish during the fall.
Here are a few great setting spray options:
- Morphe – Continuous Setting Mist (technically not drugstore, but I love this spray)
- Catrice – Prime And Fine Dewy Glow Finish Spray – Illuminating
- L’Oreal – True Lumi Shake and Glow Dew Mist
- Makeup Revolution – Glow Revolution Illuminating Face & Body Spray (a great dupe for the Iconic London Prep Set Glow spray)
And that’s it for this list of drugstore makeup and skincare must-haves for fall!
