Cover FX Power Play Foundation - Full Review

Hi, friends! How is your May going so far? I’ll be going to visit Justin in Australia on June 3rd, so I am REALLY excited for that. I just want May to be over with already LOL.

It’s been a pretty slow month on the blog as the only blog post I’ve done so far is my April Favorites. BUT, that is because I’ve been working so hard on the new theme and formatting of my blog. What do you think?! There may be some weird formatting here and there until I iron out all of the kinks, so please excuse any ugly you see for now!

For today’s post, I’m back with another foundation review! I’ll be reviewing the new (well, it’s fairly new) Cover FX Power Play Foundation.

This is my first Cover FX review and I’m actually not super familiar with many of their products. There’s no reason for that, I just never got around to trying their stuff out.

Well, today is the day, my dear friends. I’ve been giving this foundation a really good go recently (in fact, I’m wearing it as I’m writing this), so it’s finally time to give you the goods on this foundation.

Without further ado, let’s get into the review:

Some details on the foundation from coverfx.com:

A modern-matte foundation with weightless full coverage that provides sweat proof all-day wear, powerful shine control, and environmental protection.

What It Does:

Available in 40 diverse shades, this liquid foundation has buildable, medium to full coverage with a modern-matte finish. Loaded with a trio of ultra-fine powders that control shine and visibly blur imperfections, it stays on skin all day without dulling or drying complexion.

Why We Love It:

Power Play Foundation is sweat proof, waterproof, transfer-proof and provides all day wear. It is vegan, cruelty-free and free of talc, oil, fragrance, parabens and gluten.

Choosing Your Shade:

The Cover FX Shade System is based on undertone for a truly perfect match. To make shade matching simple, our shades are consistent across all formulas. Find your match in one Cover FX foundation and it’s your perfect match across all formulas.

Skin Types:

Combination to Oily Skin Types

Does NOT Contain:

Parabens, Sulfates, Phthalates, Fragrance, Gluten, Mineral Oil, Talc

How To Use:

– For brush application, place a small amount of product on the flat top of the Liquid Foundation Brush and apply to the face until well blended. Set with loose powder for optimum wear.
– Can also be applied with the fingertips or a makeup sponge.

Size:

  1. 1 fluid ounce / 30 mL

Cost:

$44.00

Review:

Before I start the actual review, I would just like to give Cover FX a high-five for coming out with 40 different shades right out of the gate with this foundation!

Packaging:

I absolutely hate the packaging. I can’t even pretend to like it. I can’t even convince myself that it’s not that bad. And I can’t be nice about it at all.

First of all, IT’S PLASTIC. I hate that. Foundations packaged in plastic bottles are reserved for the drugstore. I’m not at all an expert on how foundations are made and the cost of what goes into it, but just from a consumer’s perspective, if Fenty Beauty can package their foundation in a nice glass bottle for $34, Cover FX can probably do the same for $44.

I’ve always considered Cover FX a mid-tier luxury makeup brand, maybe similar to Make Up Forever – not like Tom Ford status, but definitely not even close to being drugstore-tier, so the plastic bottle really boggled my mind when I opened it.

It doesn’t feel luxe at all. And I know, it doesn’t matter how it’s packaged if it works well, but for $44, I at least want half-luxe.

Second of all, the nozzle is like a squirt nozzle! You have to squeeze the bottle to get the foundation out! That is just so off-putting to me. I WANT A PUMP. Or even a paddle, or even just an open top, but not a squirt nozzle.

The bottle isn’t soft enough of a plastic to have a squirt nozzle. I think squirt nozzles are reserved for tubes – like the L’Oréal Infallible foundations or like a primer tube.

When you’re at the end of this bottle, there is no way you’re going to be able to get the foundation out without your fingers hurting from having to squeeze so hard.

Seriously, everything about this packaging makes me think, “WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?! They must really be trying to cut costs…”

Scent:

This foundation has pretty much no scent at all. It’s formulated without any added fragrance, so it’s really good for those who are sensitive to scented products!

Application:

The consistency of the foundation is similar to most liquid foundations – it’s more liquid than mousse and after dispensing some out (I use the back of my hand), it’ll move around a little bit if I tilt my hand in any direction.

Cover FX doesn’t specify a recommended amount of product to use, so when I first tried it, I started off with maybe about a nickel-sized amount. I normally use about that amount for most foundations, so I figured it was a good starting point.

I always use my favorite foundation brush, the Morphe Y-6 (a flat-top kabuki), to dip into the foundation dispensed onto the back of my hand and dot it all over my face. This foundation doesn’t dry down that fast, so you don’t really have to worry about blending it out quickly.

With other foundations, I normally start on one of my cheeks and work my way around my face, re-dipping into the dispensed foundation on my hand when I need to, but with this foundation, I dot it around my entire face in the beginning and blend it out all at once.

This foundation blends out beautifully. It’s super easy to spread out and build up coverage without it getting cakey. I feel like it also sticks to the skin really well. Sometimes foundations slip and slide all over the skin, but not this one!

One of my biggest pet peeves is when foundation slips off my nose really easily, but this one is among the best when it comes to adhering to the skin. This is also evident when building up coverage – the layer already put down doesn’t lift up or start sliding around when you try to put down another layer.

Coverage:

I would say this is a medium coverage foundation. I like wearing full-coverage foundation and after one layer of a nickel-sized amount, I need to layer on another layer of a nickel-sized amount.

If you have lots of imperfections you want to cover up (like me) or if you just love a full-coverage foundation, I’d give this one a pass. You’d end up using so much product to get your desired coverage.

Finish:

I actually really love the finish of this foundation, despite it not being full-coverage. It’s matte, but it’s not a flat-matte finish where it looks like you have no life left in your skin.

There’s still a bit of natural shine on the high points of the face after applying the foundation which gives a bit of radiance, without being dewy.

It also doesn’t feel dry like a lot of the very matte foundations feel like – it even feels a bit moisturizing. Even after building up the coverage to full, the finish still looks so natural!

It’s kind of contradicting because you’d expect anything full-coverage to not look natural, but this foundation does. I guess that’s what they meant by “modern-matte,” maybe? When I first read the description, I thought to myself, “What the hell is modern-matte?”

The description says this foundation is for combination to oily skin types, which would make me assume that it wouldn’t be good for dry skin types, but that is totally not the case.

I have pretty dry skin with my t-zone being kind of normal-ish, and this foundation looks beautiful on my skin! It doesn’t cling to any dry spots or accentuate texture in any way. I would even say that it helps mask those dry spots on my skin.

I also love how lightweight this foundation is! I never feel like my pores are being clogged or that my skin just needs to breathe.

Even when I touch my face while I’m wearing this foundation, it feels just like my skin. It never feels cakey and it’s always comfortable, even by the end of the day.

Oh and it doesn’t oxidize at all. I hate when foundations oxidize. You start your day looking and feeling your best, then look like an orange by the next time you look in the mirror. Don’t need to worry about that with this foundation.

Longevity:

I wouldn’t say this foundation really lasts much longer than most other foundations. The description says “all-day wear,” but what is “all-day?” 8 hours? 10 hours? Regardless of what the claim is, I would definitely consider this foundation “long-wearing.”

Since I am wearing it right now, here’s how it went down today:

I put my makeup on at about 6 am and didn’t notice any sign of oil coming through on my nose until about noon. Absolutely no oil anywhere besides my nose (I’m dry-skinned though).

I did my first blot on only my nose at around 1 pm and didn’t touch my foundation for the rest of the work day. It wasn’t until about 6 pm or even later that I started to see the foundation breaking up just a tiny bit around my nose and mouth (you know, the creasey areas).

But still, that’s 12 hours of it looking pretty great. I almost never wear my foundation longer than 12 hours, but I’d bet you can push it to around the 16-hour mark with some blotting and touch ups.

Is it worth the cost?

IF IT CAME IN A NICE GLASS BOTTLE THEN MAYBE. But besides the packaging, I’m still on the fence about it being worth $44. The foundation itself is nice, but it didn’t really wow me and it’s not like I’d buy it for the brand name.

As much as we makeup-wearing appearance-conscious humans like to deny it, there is no doubt that seeing something with a designer label on it makes us think it’s better. It does something to our brain. Don’t deny it!

With that being said, there isn’t really that appeal with Cover FX. Hmmm, yeah I’m not sure if it’s worth it. I don’t think I’d spend $44 on it again, but I am a girl on a budget!

Rating:

As someone that loves and needs a full-coverage foundation, I wound give this foundation a 3/5. I have  to subtract a big point for the awful packaging and another point because it’s medium-coverage and I have to use SO much to build it up to full-coverage.

If I were someone that likes a medium-coverage foundation, I’d give this foundation a 4/5, only subtracting a point for the packaging. I love the finish and it lasts a good amount of time, so it isn’t really lacking in any other area for me.
